Bouchons futés / Beat the traffic

French daily Libération published today my article about BeatTheTraffic.com, a service forecasting traffic jams that was created by a French engineer in the Silicon Valley, André Guéziec.

For those who live in one of the 19 metropolitan areas covered by the service and are thinking of trying it out, here's my experience: I subscribed to BeatTheTraffic in order to test it for the article (at $20 a year) and if the site is not incredibly practical to my taste (you need to locate yourself manually on a geographical map), the one-day and one-week traffic-jam forecasts are great. I've consulted as recently as yesterday afternoon before driving to Irvine with a stint on the freeway from Hell (the 405), and SMS alerts helped figure out the best route.

When André integrates a Mapquest-style system, where you type departing and arrival addresses, it will be even better. The service has been open to the public only since June; it's only the very beginning. And we can still dream of a future when we'll be commuting through "Hallitubes," moving people at 130 mph.

Forgive me, Emmanuelle, my French is broken after midnight LA time (not that it's so hot the rest of the time), so I don't think I can translate the article at the moment...so, just wondering...do you need to have SMS enabled on your cell to have this work?

Hey Amy! Yes, either SMS or email. Nowadays, all the phones are able to receive SMS, and a bunch of SMS must be included in your plan.
Good luck with the deadline!
