I'm often asked about the difference between working as a journalist and as a private investigator: which job is the most interesting, thrilling, satisfying.... Which I'll describe on this blog as soon as I've gained a little more experience. For now, I work mostly as a journalist and my investigations for established PIs only represent a fraction of my activities, which are to be kept clearly separated by the way. We're far from James Bond-style car chases: the work involves mostly interviews, looking for witnesses, documents...

But if you are curious to meet accomplished pros in those two fascinating fields, and if you live in Southern California, join us on Nov. 9 at the L.A. Press Club to meet some of the best investigative reporters and private detectives in Los Angeles. Some of them, like Adam Dawson, are former journalists who have become renowned PIs. The Silver Lake Wine boutique will sponsor the reception and will have us taste delicious wines before the debate, which will be moderated by Don Ray, an investigative reporter and fantastic public speaker. He happens to also train PIs in public records research. Many journalists and PIs have been invited: it should be fun and informative.

EVENEMENT / EVENT! "Digging deep: What reporters can learn from and about private investigators."

WHEN: Wednesday, November 9, 2005
6:30 – 7:30 p.m. wine reception and snacks
7:30 - 8:30 Debate followed by Q and A

WHO:

MODERATOR: investigative reporter and trainer Don Ray of the Daily Journal

SPONSORS: PR Newswire and Silver Lake Wine.

Journalists aren't the only ones digging deep for information. Private investigators do pretty much the same kind of research, but with a different approach and different tools. What can reporters learn from the best private eyes? In an age when, as the Los Angeles Times recently stated, "Private eyes are now seen as essential in high-profile cases," and when traditional journalistic methods aren't enough to get every crucial bit of data, an increasing number of production companies, reporters and book writers are hiring outside investigative agencies. Does working with P.I.s violate journalistic ethics? Are investigators portrayed fairly in the media? Can the two sides learn from one another?

Wow! Don Ray is excellent! What a great speaker, and what a character! One of the things I've always wanted to do with him is to go with him on his "Dazzle Tour." Ask him about it, if you haven't already.

That's right, didn't you go to a seminar he gave to student journalists back in the days of the Daily Nexis? (Daily Lexus? I'm all confused) Matt attended one of his seminars and loved it.

I first heard of him at the PI school, when they showed us a video of one of his class, filled with tips on searching for public records. I was blown away. It's so great that he accepted to moderate this evening at the press club. I asked Don about this mysterious "Dazzle tour"... waiting to hear the story.

Oh, you just had to tempt me with that wine! Hey, I finally saw Sweet Smell of Success at the New Beverly the other night and is it just me or is J.J. Hunsecker an "evil Spock" version of the illustrious Mr. Matt Welch?
