Brokeback Mountain: un film de nanas? / the ultimate chick flick?

Photo Hosted at Buzznet.com

To celebrate Matt's new job at the Los Angeles Times on Saturday evening, Luke Ford arrived at our place after Shabbat, all excited by his latest scoop on his website (an affair in L.A.'s Jewish community), his biggest since his 1998 revelations about an AIDS epidemic within the U.S. porn industry. Unsurprisingly, the touching reunion of Luke with Ben (photo above) triggered a few "Brokeback Mountain" jokes. Luke can't help throwing in more jokes on his site when describing the evening:

"Unfortunately, the light of my life and my reason for living, Mickey "Bareback" Kaus, err, I mean Cathy Seipp, had left the party an hour earlier."

This gay cowboy movie is so successful here that it has almost become mainstream, as part of the popular culture: White House rancher George Bush hasn't seen the film, and the prospect makes him snigger weirdly (see the video.) We'd love to whisper to him the film's famous line "I wish I could quit you", which now pops up in conversations as a whim.

During the party, our girlfriend Sylvie, who grew fond of the bottle of absinth from Prague, deplored the hostile reactions of many male friends who are not really enthousiastic about this superb movie. They explain, in a mildly defensive manner, that Brokeback Mountain is a "chick flick," if not an outright woman's fantasy. This is also Matt's opinion. He liked the movie but not that much and notes that the author of the short story at the basis of the film is a woman. Timmay in San Francisco points us to an article in the Chronicle about the resistance of some heterosexual man to Brokeback Mountain, in an echo of Larry David's humor piece.

While we were chatting about the movie's gracefulness (wonderfully described by French film critic Gérard Lefort in Libération), Amy was taking pictures of bottoms for a new essential blog called: "Does my ass look fat in these pants?", the best of its kind since the invention of the "Boobies" gallery on Buzznet.

(1) Wow, merci Tony Pierce!

What happened to the English translation?

No, Brokeback is not the ultimate chick flick. Not even close. It's an epic love story along the lines of old Hollywood classics. It is for that reason that it will win Best Picture. They've been honoring similar pics for decades. Think of Brokeback as "Out of Wyoming," "Gone with the Sheep," etc.

Luke: it's coming, there's a little tech glitch. And you'll see: it's all about YOU

Love "Gone with the Sheep"! I also think they'll get the Oscar/

There is a reason that heterosexual men, i.e. real men, don't like Bareback Mountain. It is a movie about gays. It is hardly a chick flick - maybe it is a chick flick for those chicks who like gays. To think that movies have gone from "A Man for all Seasons" to this atrocity. This is why the movie industry is having money problems nowadays.
