Nos rongeurs et la "panthère française" / Our rodents and "the French panther"

Back to Los Angeles, disconnected: the phone line was dead. We assumed this was due to the storms that have pounded California, but the technician for the phone company that showed up after a few days was adamant -- this was the work of squirrels, who love chewing on phone lines and installations.

This town feels like a huge animal reserve: in addition to squirrels quite everywhere, we regularly bump into raccoons, coyotes (i.e. the episode of the cat saved from a coyote's jaws in front of our house), skunk families, and the famous "party possum" from the garden (photo) who usually sticks out his nose from his favorite tree only during barbecues and other social events. And let's not forget the rats, of course. They show up in the summer especially, during droughts, when they come down to quench their thirst in Beverly Hills swimming pools, and have the bad taste of drowning and floating on the turquoise waters, prompting screams from the property owners.

Friend and neighbor Philippe Garnier, an iconic French rock journalist living in L.A., once mentioned seeing a deer in the middle of Hollywood, on the grass of a Scientology center, in his "vinyl safari" novel "Les coins coupés" (Cut Corners), which detailed the rocker lifestyle of a termite exterminator. This is another common sight in Los Angeles: houses wrapped in a gigantic plastic bubble during fumigation.

Philippe just released a new book in France, Caractères, about character actors ("acteurs de composition" in French), including Simone Simon, a.k.a. Hollywood's "French panther." As always, Philippe's articles in the French daily Libération (such as today's obit of Shelley Winters) serve as the curator of Hollywood's fascinating ghost menagerie.

Welcome back! And a belated Happy New Year!

Posted by: Paul Hrissikopoulos at January 17, 2006 12:44 AM

Thanks Paul, no Eurogloom this year -- that's my resolution. I wish you an exciting year and... more sleep (last time I saw you, you were trying to break the world record of bad commutes! Hope this is over.)

Happy new year !

Oh yeah -- done and done. With my "new" '86 Plymouth Reliant, I'm King of the 110 and Prince of the 405.
