Dans le désert "irakien" californien / in the California "Iraqi desert"

The Los Angeles canicule not being enough, I drove three hours on the road to Death Valley getting deeper into the desert until Fort Irwin, the famous military training camp where U.S. soldiers prepare their deployement to Iraq by fighting actor-insurgents in mock Iraqi villages.

Observation of the training won't be until tomorrow, so I walked around the base, which looks like it sprouted out of nowhere like some kind of desert mushroom. It looks like at the end of the day, some soldiers pump iron at the gym while swallowing swearwords that could occur to them (many signs ask them to refrain from talking trash and flipping the bird); they jump acrobatically in the pool; play snooker and drink beer; smile to the rare women around, and relax by playing war video games on giant screens in the recreation center.
