Borat: 'sexy time' au tribunal? / Borat: 'sexy time' in court?

Last night, the entire room was rolling on the floor, crying with laughter during a screening of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the delirious movie which everybody is talking about in the U.S. In this mockumentary/road-pic, Borat, a Kazakh journalist who is anti-semitic, mysogynist, racist and homophobic goes off to explore American and shocks a gallery of unsuspecting characters filmed without their knowledge: féminists, red-necks, pentecostals... It's indescribably funny. Borat pushes the limits so far that he gets kicked out from places, without ever dropping character, and Sacha Baron Cohen's performace is worthy of an Oscar (oh yes.) The film comes out tomorrow in the U.S, November 15 in France (see this praising French critic, soon after Borat's recent visit to 'the minor nation of France' in October.)

"I'm trying to find USA publisher, and I hope I can receive good offer from Hollywood and play my own life and share with my fans, Julia Roberts, Spielberg, David Bowie, or others, this movie."

The day after, I don't like the fact that the entire movie is about exploiting (mostly good) people to laugh at their expense, but it's fair enough, with "Borat" paying the price and demeaning himself copiously. By a miracle that escapes me, the movie's team managed to secure releases from all the duped people. Since this movie will certainly rake it in big at the box office, it should rain lawsuits, not from the Kazakh government, but from the "involuntary actors" ridiculed in the movie and from lobbiess, especially in Europe where freedom of speech has its limits. Already in Germany, where Borat was released today a group of defence of Gypsies and an individual have filed two lawsuit trying to prevent Fox from distributing the movie. And the webstar of the crazy Internet bubble years of our youth, the Turkish Mahir ("I KISS YOU!!!") is considering suing Borat's creator for stealing his character. Sacha Baron Cohen has said he was inspired by an outrageously funny Russian doctor, but Boing Boing has a photo montage that dissipates any doubt: Borat is Mahir! Not to mention that the French version of the movie's website reminds me of Mahir's original page and of subsequent versions of his site. Mahir tells Wired that he has his own Hollywood ambitions:
"I'm trying to find USA publisher, and I hope I can receive good offer from Hollywood and play my own life and share with my fans, Julia Roberts, Spielberg, David Bowie, or others, this movie."

Regarding the Mahir ("I Kiss You" website) lawsuit against Borat...

The Celebrities section of ENN published an article that investigated the merits of a Mahir lawsuit against Borat, and the results may surprise you... :)

Thanks! Impressive work! I love the old video of Kristof, Borat's ancestor, that you dug up.

Thanks for the kudo Emmanuelle. :)

I was happy to find that old clip as well. He's a very nervy guy, that Borat, and I'm glad to see his movie was #1 this weekend... even though the studio decreased the number of theatres from 2000 down to 800!

Regards and Chenquieh!

This morning, Wed. The New York Post reports that Mahir was boarding a plane to England where he's going to "meet with his lawyer" about the potential lawsuit...

"Two anonymous plaintiffs are suing 20th Century Fox and One America Productions, claiming members of their college fraternity were interviewed to become part of the smash "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" film."
