Los Angeles a voté Sarko / L.A. voted for Sarko (*)

Près de 50% des expatriés (ou immigrés?) français de Los Angeles inscrits sur les listes électorales ont voté pour Nicolas Sarkozy (contre 30,5% dans l'hexagone) au premier tour des présidentielles 2007, selon des résultats affichés au Consulat général de France à L.A.: sur 12 500 inscrits (j'arrondis) seulement 3000 ont voté (apparemment, c'est plus que d'habitude) et parmi eux, 1500 pour Sarkozy et 700 pour Segolène Royal. Les résultats sont à peu près similaires au niveau national, où près de 75 000 Français installés aux Etats-Unis sont inscrits pour voter (détails au bas.)

Close to 50% of the French expats (or immigrants?) living in Los Angeles and registered to vote voted for Nicolas Sarkozy (compared to 30.5% in France itself) in the first round of France's presidential election 2007, according to results posted at the French consulate in L.A.: out of the 12, 500 registered to vote (I round up numbers) only 3,000 voted (but apparently, it's more than usual) and among them, 1,500 for Sarkozy and 700 for Segolène Royal. Results are pretty much similar on the national level, where 75,000 US-based frogs are registered (see details below.)

It should cheer up "Sarkozy l'Américain", as he's being called, i.e. this little satirical video found on the citizen journalism forum Agoravox (the song is a charming Hungarian nursery rhyme.)

Shooter, franc tireur / Straight shooter

La sortie en France de Shooter cette semaine tombe bien mal à point, mais ce nouveau film d'Antoine Fuqua vaut (vaguement) le détour, comme le souligne l'ami Garnier dans son article: "Shooter, la relève de Rambo" dans Libération. A la projection avec Philippe, nous étions étonnés par l'audacité des références anti-Bush, avec de gros sabots certes, mais inédites jusqu'à présent dans un long-métrage populaire post 11 septembre (entre autre: un méchant en chaise roulante employé par le gouvernement américain évoque les délices d’Abou Ghraib... Un autre méchant ressemble fort à Dick Cheney, avec allusion à son accident de chasse.) Mais le film doit beaucoup de son efficacité à Mark Wahlberg, dont le portrait est signé Bibi ("Mark Wahlberg ou l'étoffe du héros")

The release in France of Shooter this week in France is kind of unfortunate, but the new Antoine Fuqua movie is (kind of) worth giving it a shot, as French journalist friend Philippe Garnier writes in his article: "Shooter, la relève de Rambo" (Shooter takes over from Rambo) in French daily Libération. At the press screening with Philippe, we were surprised by the audacity of the anti-Bush references. They were not very subtle, mind you, but never seen before in a popular post-9/11 feature film (a bad guy in a wheelchair, who works for the American government, extols Abu Ghraib... Another bad guy looks a lot like Dick Cheney and there's an allusion to his hunthing accident.) But the movie's efficiency owes a lot to Mark Wahlberg, whom I profile for Libération ("Mark Wahlberg ou l'étoffe du héros")

Selon notre interview, le réalisateur Antoine Fuqua voulait que Shooter serve de catharsis à tous les Américains patriotes furieux d'avoir été embarqués dans la guerre en Irak sous de faux prétextes et rêvent de se débarasser de Bush et Cheney. Ils sont chercher du réconfort en dehors des cinémas visiblement, car Shooter a raté sa cible au box office américain mais semble se rattraper à l'international.

Director Antoine Fuqua said in our interview that he wanted Shooter to be cathartic to all patriotic Americans who are now so angry for having being duped into the war in Iraq and fantasize about getting rid of Bush and Cheney. They must have sought comfort outside of movie theaters because Shooter missed its target at the U.S. box office, though it seems to have caught up in the international markets.

Petite frayeur à L.A. / Lil' L.A. fright

"Alors, l'autre soir dans le quartier de Skid Row, un type pointe une arme à feu en direction de ma cervelle et crie "BOUM!! BOUM!!" Ensuite, l'histoire devient très bizarre."

Matt raconte sur le blog Opinion L.A. sa petite aventure en sortant du travail dans le centre-ville de Los Angeles et découvre que les résidents de la Cité des Anges peuvent obtenir une très chouette carte des crimes commis dans leur rue sur le site de la police de L.A., la LAPD.

"So, the other night in Skid Row a guy points a handgun in the general direction of my brains and yells "BOOM!! BOOM!!" And then the story really gets weird."

Matt tells of his little adventure coming out of work in Downtown Los Angeles on the Opinion L.A. blog and discovers that City of Angels residents can obtain a nifty crime map of all crimes committed on their street on the LAPD website.
