(UPDATED) Le mystérieux shériff et Paris Hilton / Paris & the mystery sheriff

The Washington Post's William Booth, one of my favorite writers in U.S. newspapers, reviews the messy saga of Paris Hilton, who is jailed one day, freed for "medical reasons" (risk of a nervous breakdown apparently), then re-jailed this morning as a crisis plays out between the sheriff and L.A. district attorney, Rocky Delgadillo. Booth writes:

"What medical condition could be so serious it could not be treated by the medical staff at the Century Regional Detention Facility, which houses 2,200 inmates, many of them mentally ill, addicted or in poor health?"

This open war between Sheriff Lee Baca, Delgadillo and the judge over the starlet's fate has had at least one positive effect: a greater scrutiny of Lee Baca, an elected official who loves celebrities and doesn't hide his admiration for the church of Scientology (an adept? The Los Angeles Times never dug that out and just mentioned his relationship with the sect in passing.) Rick Ross of Cult News, the source website about cults, has several articles about our scary "He's the sheriff".

+ Ray Richmond: "Sheriff Lee Baca clearly feared a PR crapstorm should something have happened to Paris while in county custody, and he blinked."

+ Sharon Waxman : "The national obsession with celebrity collided head-on with the more serious issue of the equal application of justice on Friday."

+ TMZ: It costs more than 10 times the normal amount to jail Paris Hilton.
