Clearly the Oscars only wanted stars on the podium: the Oscar-winner of the Motorcycle Diaries song, Jorge Drexler, sung his thank you in a protest gesture. He was upset that Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana were picked to perform his song in front of a worldwide audience instead of him!

Q: Cate, your temperament is much more that of an actor and less of a movie star. Do you think that an Oscar...
(Blanchett, in her Katharine Hepburn impersonation): Oh darling you caught me on the wrong day!!!Q. Oh, is that what it is? Do you think the Oscar will change --
(Blanchett, roaring): Will change me? Absolutely, you ass****!!"
(later:) Can I have my champagne now?
Now Alexander Payne and his co-screenwriter buddy Jim Taylor are talking about drinking:
Question: what kind of grapes, what kind of wine would you drink to celebrate this oscar, apart from champagne?Taylor: We're having some tequila.
Payne: We just had a couple shots of Patron down there.
Journalist: No Pinot Noir in the...?
Payne: No. Not efficient enough, if you know what I mean!

Yeah, my French is awful and even I winced.
I am so happy to see that I am not the only one who found beyonce's noise making session on stage to have been a drag.
Hard to get her horrible singing out of our heads, he?!! This was such an obcene vocal strip-tease.
Beyonce sang 3 of the 5 songs nominated. Minnie Driver should have sung the one from Phantom because she did it in the film! Uh - hello? Even here in L.A., we're getting as tired of Beyonce as we are of Paris Hilton.
And of course the choir from Les Choristes should have been there. How wonderful it would have been for these kids - a real treat.
I thought the entire show was poor, shoddy, boring! The only positive thing is that it ended 15 minutes early, which is the first time since I can remember that this ever has happned.

Thanks for all the comments and sorry for those that I erased by mistake yesterday, while under a comments spam attack.
There was a French reader remining us that Les Choristes are not great. True: the film is a 50s movie, very pleasant but there were many better, edgier movies to represent France at the Oscars. The songs by the choir are nice though. I though the Oscars insulted the authors of the songs by sending stars to perform, that's all.
Very true, Miss E. Not to take anything away from the choir that was used or Banderas/Santana, but why serve us les oeux de lump when they have the $ to serve caviar, you know? Which other French films did you feel were as/more deserving? - because I'd like to check them out.
Bonjour,
Judi, regarding French films worth seeing: luckily, in general only the best French films get to be shown in America so you don't see the terrible ones - they just don't travel! The Chorists is not doing well at all in the U.S. by the way. Critics find it too "beret-baguette".
There's a very interesting documentary on the world wine industry coming out, Mondovino but as far as features: Roi et Reine is supposed to be very good. I wish I could recommend films but living here, I don't get to see many French films.
If you live in L.A. there will be a week of French festival films http://www.colcoa.com/
at the director's Guild.
Jeez, another piece of Euro-trash slamming the Oscars. Of course, if you really wanted to hear a piece of Euro-trash scream, cry, moan, bitch, and yell, then DON'T invite them to the Oscars.
Or, even worse, invite them to a film festival of nothing but European films. Now watching endless hours of state-subsiized govenrment empoyees, erm, direcstors.
The Beyoncee video is here!
A reader sends us this link:
Bonjour,

A+
You seem to have so much fun !!
