Noir destins: cela faisait longtemps que la Une de Libération ne m'avait autant impressionnée. L'actrice Marie Trintignant est morte, suite à des coups (tombée? frappée?) lors d'une dispute avec son nouveau compagnon, Bertrand Cantat du groupe Noir Désir. / Dark destinies: it's been a while since the front page of French daily Libération had impressed me that much. It's the biggest story in France right now: French actress Marie Trintignant (yes, the daughter of Jean-Louis Trintignant, male star of the 60s date movie 'a man and a woman') has died from injuries after her rocker boyfriend allegedly beat her. Did she fall? Did he give the fatal punch? We don't know. But the guy, Bertrand Cantat, singer of the band Noir Desir ("black desire") is one of the most famous rockers in France. Think of a 'Jon Bon Jovi cute' 40 year-old, with amazing charisma and a huge following.

Je n'ai jamais été grande fan du groupe, mais je l'avais interviewé il y a huit ou neuf ans, pour le quotidien communiste de Marseille où je pigeais à l'époque. Cantat avait été charmant, très charmeur aussi, intense et engagé. Plus tard, je l'avais recroisé à Budapest, au club Tilos Az A puis aux concerts du groupe. Bertrand Cantat venait souvent en Hongrie car il était tombé amoureux d'une belle hongroise francophone, K., qui travaillait à l'Institut français. Avant de quitter Budapest, je l'avais vue à une soirée chez un copain commun, dans le quartier du château: elle venait de donner naissance à son premier enfant et était radieuse. Quelle chance elle a, se disaient les filles à Budapest, d'avoir décroché un Français aussi canon et charismatique. / I was never a big fan of the band, but I interviewed Cantat years ago for a Communist daily in Marseilles for which I was free-lancing back then. D'après les reportages dans la presse française, après la naissance de leur deuxième enfant, Bertrand Cantat l'a abandonnée en février dernier pour vivre une passion tumultueuse avec Marie Trintignant. Et d'après la mère de l'actrice décédée, le rockeur avait maltraité des femmes par le passé. C'est ahurissant et très triste. Libé parle de toute la génération des fans de Noir Désir sous le choc. Coïncidence: Marie Trintignant tournait son dernier film à Vilnius avec la chanteuse Lio, qui avait défrayé la chronique il y a quelques années en confiant au magazine Marie-Claire qu'elle s'était faite tabasser pendant des années par son compagnon. C'était la première fois en France qu'une célébrité avouait une chose pareille. / According to reports in the French press, Cantat left her soon after the birth of their second child in February, to pursue a tumultuous love affair with actress Marie Trintignant. According to the mother of the late actress, the rocker had mistreated women in the past. It's mind-blowing and very sad. Libération has a story about how an entire generation of Noir Desir fans is in shock. Coïncidence: when she fell into a coma, Marie Trintignant was shooting a TV miniseries in Vilnius, Lithuania, along with French singer-actress Lio, who caused a stir a few years ago when she told the French magazine Marie-Claire that she had been a victim of domestic violence for years. It was the first time in France that a celebrity had revealed such a thing.

Cet été, l'Amérique est obsédée par l'affaire Kobe Bryant, la star du basket accusée de viol. La victime supposée serait montée dans la chambre d'hôtel du Laker en acceptant de crapahuter avec lui, jusqu'à un moment où elle aurait changé d'avis. Une affaire difficilement imaginable en France. Tout comme la mort dramatique de Marie Trintignant: cet excellent commentateur sur la Radio Suisse Romande rappelait que ce genre de faits divers est habituellement réservé aux Etats-Unis (écouter l'émission en Real Audio) et surprend, même en France, le pays créateur du concept de "crime passionnel." / This summer, America is obsessed by the case of Kobe Bryant, the beloved basketball star who has been charged with sexual assault. It looks like the alleged victim went up to his hotel room to fool around with the Laker, and changed her mind in the process. It's hard to imagine such a scandal in France. Like it's hard to imagine the dramatic death of Marie Trintignant: this excellent comentator on Radio Suisse Romande was reminding us that these types of tragedies usually don't happen in France and seem a staple of the U.S. (listen to the show en Real Audio - in French) This sad news story shocks even the country that invented the notion of "crime passionnel."

Si un tel fait-divers s'était produit aux USA ou en Grande-Bretagne impliquant une actrice et l'un des rockeurs les plus célèbres du pays, les parents de la victime, le suspect et sa famille n'auraient aucun répit.
Et peut-être bien que les tabloids auraient rapporté il y a longtemps la propension du chanteur à frapper ses compagnes. / If such an affair had occurred in the USA or Great Britain, involving an actress of Hollywood royalty and one of the most famous rockers in the country, the victim's parents, the suspect and his family wouldn't be left in peace for one second.
But one can assume that the tabloids would have reported a long time ago about the rocker's propensity to beat up women.

True: I know, each time a violent crime happens, Europeans always say "this kind of things only happens in the U.S." Even though Europe has her own school-shootings now, snippers targeting politicians etc.

Here, I would guess that people don't usually have time to punch each other to death, because often, a gun is not very far. Are there proportionally more deaths from domestic violence in the US than in France? I don't know and I'm looking for statistics right now.

Bon anniversaire Matt!

Matt a eu 35 ans aujourd'hui. Avec une crêve d'enfer attrapée dans les casinos frigorifiés de Las Vegas, comme le Paris et sa fausse tour Eiffel: la photo n'est pas mal, compte tenu qu'elle a été prise avec mon téléphone portable et mobloguée ici.
On peut voir que ce casino, qui se veut un mini-Paris de carton-pâte (très bien fait d'ailleurs,) a hissé les drapeaux français de nouveau récemment. Car pour dorloter les touristes américains, ses vaches-à-lait, le Paris avait retiré ses drapeaux tricolores au début de la guerre du golfe "pour ne pas heurter les sentiments des clients." Incroyable! / Happy birthday Matt! Matt turned 35 today. With a terrible cold he caught in the over-AC'd casinos of Vegas, such as the Paris and its fake Eiffel tower: the photo here is not too bad considering that it was taken with my cell phone and moblogged here. You can see that this gigantic hotel-casino, which wants to be a mini-Disneylanded Paris, (and is very well-done in fact) has raised French flags again. Because to avoid irritating American tourists, who provide much of the butter at the Paris, the casino had taken the French flags off in March, following that county's opposition to the United States' invasion of Iraq. Incroyable!

Partie me ressourcer à Las Vegas, dont le panneau d'accueil a largement inspiré ce petit site - un remodelage est d'ailleurs en cours. L'occasion aussi de faire tourner le moblogue un peu plus vigoureusement. / Gone to regenerate myself in Vegas, which fabulous site widely inspired this little site, currently being remodelled. This trip should be an occasion to bring some steam to the moblog.
