Oui au mariage gay en Californie / Yes to gay marriage in California

From Los Angeles, where I'm spending a few days, gay marriage proponents are thanking San Francisco for leading the way towards today's historical ruling: following lawsuits brought by gay couples and the city itself, California Supreme court has legalized gay marriage, by finding it unconstitutional for California law to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples.

We'd love to congratulate all the gay couples who, finally, will get their unofficial marriage recognized or will be able to get hitched in 30 days, (L.A. 's mayor invites them to register for a license!) but it's probably too early to rejoice without any reservations:Indeed, there is a strong chance that California voters will be weighing a ballot initiative to ban same-sex mariage in Novembre by voting for a state constitutional amendment that would overturn today's decision. And unfortunately, Californians as a whole are not as progressive as what you'd expect: in 2000, more than 61% of voters rejected gay marriage.

Dallas, 30 ans après / Dallas, 30 years later

Our thongs-wearing spy in Austin tells us that the Texas history museum will soon unveil a big exhibition about one of our favorite childhood TV series, which was particularly exotic in Mitterrand's Socialist France: Dallas!

I don't know yet if this exhibition will explore one of the most interesting aspects of Dallas: its role in the rejection of Communism in Eastern Europe, first and foremost in Romania. Read this opinion piece by Matt and Nick in the Washington Post, How Dallas won the cold war, and the subsequent comments by furious Reganites. Article snippet:

"It was the booze-and-sex-soaked caricature of free enterprise and executive lifestyles that proved irresistible not just to stagflation-weary Americans but viewers from France to the Soviet Union to Ceausescu's Romania.

"Dallas" wasn't simply a television show. It was an atmosphere-altering cultural force."

In Eastern Europe, where it was common for members of several generations of one family to live under the same roof in the '80s, fans of the series enjoyed watching this wealthy petrol dynasty live in the same ranch (quite improbably for the United States), have dinner together and get intimately involved in each other's affairs. Dallas' phenomenal success in a hundred countries is still pretty hard to explain: (a Dutch academic researcher tried to to do it in a book Watching Dallas, and a French anthropologist has written about the similitudes between Dallas and Homer's poems...)

As we're currently re-viewing the first season of Dallas, I find that the series holds up surprisingly well and remains curiously captivating in all its tacky glory. Throughout the years, I've acquired the dubious cultural advantage of having both visited the Southfork ranch in Texas and "Southforscu" in Romania, a replica erected by a local mafioso inspired by JR, in a plain in the middle of nowhere.

In her direct, no-nonsense style, she writes about her several attempts to conceive a child at a Manhattan clinic.

Here in the U.S., single women (very rarely as a first choice, in case it's even worth mentioning) can access sperm banks and medically assisted procreation. That's not the case in France, where these methods are only available to heterosexual couples. In general, France has "a more conservative view on family, that people only envision like in a commercial for the breakfast drink Ricoré," according to Guillemette. I'm eager to receive her book by way of Amazon France, and to talk about it with the author on this very blog.

Crazy Days and Nigths, an ultra-addictive anonymous blogger from L.A. who introduces himself as an entertainment lawyer-to-the-stars, is enriching his blog's "Scientology section" with captivating articles about the cult in Hollywood. He also refers to new content on Wikileaks, this collaborative website created by Chinese dissidents. It has become an online dark alley for "whistle blowers" from around the world, among them, former members of CoS furiously publishing as many corrosive confidential documents as they can. Beware of fakes, obviously; but this being said, it's incredible how the Anonymous movement has incited former members of the cult to speak up in public or publish exclusive information in the United States these past four months.

Rationnement de Perrier et Euroblues d'expat / Perrier-rationed expats get the Euro Blues

The Washington Post Online asked me to react to an op-ed published on Sunday by novelist Diane Johnson, titled The Dollar's Down. But We're Not Out, about the cruel plight of Dollar-earning American expatriates in Paris currently under duress due to the changing fortunes of the ever-soaring Euro.

This successful author (her best-seller,"Le Divorce," was adapted into a movie) is a charming person in life, I'm told, but her column has unleashed a flurry of spiteful comments on the Post's website. It has to be said that her timing couldn't be worse: the details of her dolorous sacrifices (fini expensive bottles of mineral water to spritz up meals at Parisean bistros; adieux airfare in business class to San Francisco...) didn't exactly move many readers at a time when Americans, and Europeans for that matter, are seeing their purchasing power crumble and fear an upcoming economic depression. Diane Johnson's out-of-touch candor reminded me of another American in Paris, Susan Spano of the Los Angeles Times, who was regularly shred to pieces on the blog of our favorite Française de coeur Amy Alkon (fabulous as always above, shopping in a Parisean supermarket -- all photos by Gregg Sutter).

Here is my "rebuttal" (perhaps just as disconnected from the French reality?): (Americans in Paris don't have it so bad.)

Congrats Ken Layne! Our friend Ken just acquired legendary political blog Wonkette from Nick Denton.

Funny: while on vacation on a remote island, I just read "Washingtonienne," by Jessica Cutler, the uninhibited and slightly troubled Capitol intern who had a few friends-with-benefits relationships with rich old dudes in Washington. In 2004, her blog fueled the first big sex scandal on Wonkette... known as "Bloguette" in this very entertaining roman à clef that is a must-read for any novice in the American capital. Not only because of you-know-what: I had never read anything so revealing about the work life in congressional offices before.

Anonymous: 9,000 on Operation Reconnect? (updated)

Today's French daily Libération ran my story about the fascinating Anonymous movement critical of Scientology (click here for a Google Translation), as seen from the U.S. The paper version has a gallery of photos of masked "Anons" taken during the Paris demonstration on Saturday, complete with their somewhat inspirational leader Nono Le Clown (read Renaud Lecadre's account of the very small demonstration here.) This third edition of Anonymous' global protest was called "Operation Reconnect" and I wish I could have attended the Washington demo but I'm on vacation outside of the U.S. Anonymous forums seem to say that between 200 and 300 people showed up in the U.S. capital, roughly as many as on March 15, when I came across their previous demonstration by accident:.

On a global level, participation was the same or less than last month, according to several regional "organizers." Anons in charge of the headcount Enturbulation.org estimate that "Operation Reconnect" has gathered some 9,000 demonstrators in a hundred cities around the world (stats keep changing: see thread and world map.) . Which seems a tad optimistic to me, given that leading cities such as L.A. or London had perhaps 300-400 people, but numerous other cities such as Moscow, Lausanne or Paris only had a handful. Which doesn't take anything from the uniqueness of this never-seen before network.

Due to the lack of space, the paper didn't end up running a sidebar on the surprisingly low participaion in France: "I don't think that [Anonymous] really exists in France," said Karin Pouw, a Church of Scientology International spokeswoman, before mentioning with satisfaction that "the situation has changed" (in February, French president Nicolas Sarkozy's Head of Cabinet, Emmanuelle Mignon, questioned the use of the word "cult" to describe Scientology.)

Here's how French Anons explain the lack of involvement in the usually demonstration-happy France: this is due to the English-only (until very recently) content on Anonymous' main websites and forums and the fact that "Scientology is just not visible in France," according to a young computer guy and key French Anon. When a cult is recognized as such in a country, "people don't have the same motivation [as in the U.S.] to fight for the cause." A point worth mentioning: CoS opponents such as Nono Le Clown seem to be able to line up meetings with elected officials "of different parties" to express their concerns about Scientology.

Getting to talk to your representative about Scientology is another story in the United States, and I wish this aspect could have been mentioned in more detail in the Liberation article. I contacted several lobbyists, politicians who have a reputation for being weary of cults, and the American Psychiatric Association (Scientology is actively fighting against psychiatry) and they either all declined or ignored my requests for comments for this article. "Many elected officials and religious leaders are afraid to say publicly what they tell me privately: some of them tell me that they've already been intimidated by the Church of Scientology," said Rev. John Wetzel, a critic who acts as a de facto unpaid "representative" for Scientology detractors in Washington. Arnie Lerma, a former CoS member turned opponent is more blunt: "We’re fighting in guerilla warfare style because there is no courage in Washington.”

Nancy Rommelmann has a wonderful post about befriending Cathy by cold-calling Buzz magazine in L.A.

"Today is the one-year anniversary of the death of our friend Cathy Seipp. I say "our" because she so impacted her core group of friends, of which Matt Welch wrote on this date last year, "[Cathy] deserves all the credit in the world for creating this community of unlike-minded weirdoes around her." Read on...

My favorite detail in the case of Eliot Spitzer, the New York governor and anti-corruption crusader thown into a prostitution and financial
scandal: this penny-pincher made his a last, 1000 Dollar-an-hour call girl travel from New York to Washington on a regular crowded regional Amtrak train instead of reserving a ticket on the comfortable Acela Express. In France, it would be a little bit like sending someone off on a slow TER regional train instead of a TGV, but you have to admit that this Acela train is overly expensive: something like $130 one way!

At least he didn't make her travel on a "Chinese bus": those rustic Chinatown buses that take you from Washington to New York in 4 or 5 hours for less than $25 a pop. Had he waited a bit, he could have bought a seat the new Greyhound bus with on-board wi-fi whose imminent launch was announced on Newyorkology.

+ Why was Eliot Spitzer's lifestyle illegal, anyway?
